FRIDAY THE 13TH

Jason fans have plenty of reasons to get excited this February and the legendary slasher franchise gets a makeover, special editions and even a documentary.  February 3rd will see the much-anticipated retrospective His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th released on region 1 DVD.  Directed by Daniel Farrands (who wrote Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers) and featuring contributions from various cast and crew members from the infamous series, the documentary will be hosted by none other than FX genius Tom Savini.

For those who have been cursing Paramount's disappointing DVDs, the good news is that also on the 3rd will see a Deluxe Edition of Friday the 13th Part 3, which will finally receive a 3D release along with special editions of the first two movies.  Details are sketchy, but fans are hoping that the footage that the MPAA exercised from the movies will be reinserted, which would mean more blood (though an uncut version of the first film has been avalable on region 1 for a few years now).

And last but not least, Jason will finally return to the big screen!  Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash didn't happen, and 2001's Jason X seemed to mark an end to the franchise, but Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes have continued their 'lets remake everything' trend by turning their attention to Friday the 13th.  Despite the skepticism from many fans, the casting of stuntman Derek Mears (marking a definite end to Kane Hodder's run in the role), a back to basics poster and a tense trailer has changed the minds of most.  Friday the 13th will be released in America on the 13 February 2009, which just happens to be a Friday!

A NEW WAVE OF 3D

It happened in the 1950's, and then again in the '80's, and it's upon us once again... 3D movies are back!  After the recent success of the Nightmare Before Christmas revamp, the 'it makes my eyes blurry and my head hurt' technology looks set to dominate the next twelve months, specifically when it comes to the horror genre.  First, there was the recent release of Scar, then 2009 is rumoured to see such offerings as My Bloody Valentine, Piranha, Dark Country, The Mortician and even Final Destination 4.  Time to dig out those red and green glasses.
